Test Overview

The Life in the UK Test is a requirement for individuals applying for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) or British citizenship.

1. Test Format

The test consists of 24 multiple-choice questions based on various aspects of British life, history, and culture. Questions will be different for each individual at test center.

2. Question Format

Four (4) types of questions may appear on the test. Below are the examples with sample formats.

  1. Single Correct Answer. Sample: Who was the British monarch during the American Revolutionary War?
  2. True or False: Sample: The Magna Carta, signed in 1215, established the principle that everyone is subject to the law, even the king.
  3. Select Correct Statement. Sample: Which of the following statements is correct?
  4. Select Two or more Correct Answers. Sample: Which TWO political parties formed the coalition government in 2010?

3. Test time

You will have 45 minutes to answer 24 questions.

4. Passing Score

To pass the test, you must answer at least 18 out of 24 questions.

5. Success rate

As per data obtained via the Freedom of Information Act revealed that around 160k people in the UK took the Life in the UK test. Among these participants, roughly 81% passed while 19% did not pass.

6. Test Language

Questions in test are available in English, Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, and Irish. Test takers can choose the language in which they are most comfortable.

8. When you do not need to take the test

  1. You do not need to take the Life in the UK Test if you:
  2. are under 18 years old
  3. are over 65 years old
  4. have a long-term physical or mental condition
  5. are a diplomat or member of the armed forces
