Christian Churches in the UK

  1. Church and State
    • In England, there is an official link between the Church of England and the state.
    • The Church of England is a Protestant Church, established during the Reformation (1530s).
    • It is known internationally as the Anglican Church (or Episcopal Church in the US and Scotland).
  2. Monarch's Role
    • The British monarch is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
    • The Archbishop of Canterbury is its spiritual leader.
    • Senior Church appointments are officially made by the monarch, but practically chosen by the Prime Minister and a Church committee.
    • Some bishops of the Church of England have seats in the House of Lords (called Lords Spiritual).
  3. Scotland
    • The national church is the Church of Scotland, a Presbyterian Church (also Protestant).
    • It is governed by ministers and elders.
    • The Moderator of the General Assembly leads the Church for one year and represents it publicly.
    • Important: The Church of Scotland is independent of the state (no established church in Scotland).
  4. Wales and Northern Ireland
    • There is no established Church in Wales or Northern Ireland.
