Test Overview
The Driving Theory Test is a mandatory exam for individuals applying for a driving licence in the UK. It assesses your knowledge of road rules, traffic signs, and hazard perception skills. Passing this test is essential before you can take the practical driving test.
1. Test Format
The Driving Theory Test has two parts:
- Multiple-Choice Questions:
- 50 questions covering road rules, safety, vehicle handling, and traffic signs.
- Questions are randomly selected, so each test will differ.
- Hazard Perception Test:
- 14 video clips showing real-life driving scenarios.
- Each clip contains at least one developing hazard, and one clip contains two.
Both parts must be passed in the same attempt to pass the test overall.
2. Question Format
The Driving Theory Test includes multiple types of questions designed to evaluate your knowledge of road safety, traffic rules, and hazard perception. Below are the types of questions with sample formats:

3. Test Time
- Multiple-Choice Section: You have 57 minutes to complete 50 questions.
- Hazard Perception Section: Takes around 20 minutes.
The total duration of the test is approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
4. Passing Score
To pass the Driving Theory Test:
- You must score at least 43 out of 50 in the multiple-choice section.
- You need 44 out of 75 in the hazard perception test.
You must pass both sections in the same sitting.
7. Success Rate
As per DVSA statistics, the average pass rate for the Driving Theory Test is around 50%. Proper preparation is essential to increase your chances of success.
6. Test Language
The Driving Theory Test is available in English and Welsh. Other languages are not supported, so test-takers must be comfortable with one of these languages.
7. Test Topics
The multiple-choice section covers a wide range of topics, including:
- Road and Traffic Signs: Understanding signs and their meanings.
- Rules of the Road: Speed limits, right of way, and stopping distances.
- Driving Safety: How to handle emergencies and unsafe driving conditions.
- Hazard Awareness: Identifying and responding to potential hazards.

8. Who Does Not Need to Take the Test?
You do not need to take the Driving Theory Test if:
- You hold a full driving licence from an EU or EEA country (this may change post-Brexit).
- You are applying for a moped licence and already hold a car licence.
- You are upgrading a licence within the same vehicle category (e.g., automatic to manual).

- Voiceover Assistance: The test can be read aloud through headphones.
