Test Result

The driving theory test results are provided immediately after completing the test at the test centre. Here’s what you need to know about receiving your results and the next steps:

1. Receiving Your Results

  1. Printed Copy: After completing the test, you will go to the reception where the staff will hand over a printed copy of your result. This is done silently—they do not announce the result. You can open the folded printout to see if you passed or failed. The printout will also include your total score and a topic-wise breakdown of your performance.
  2. Email Confirmation: After some time, you will receive an email with your result, which includes a congratulations message if you passed and your certificate details.

2. How Is the Test Scored?

The test consists of two parts:

  1. Multiple-Choice Section: Pass mark: 43 out of 50 questions.
  2. Hazard Perception Section: Pass mark: 44 out of 75 points.

You must pass both sections to successfully complete the test.

3. What Happens If You Pass?

  1. Certificate of Achievement: You will receive a certificate with your pass number.
  2. Validity: The pass certificate is valid for 2 years, during which time you need to pass the practical driving test.
  3. Next Steps: Start preparing for your practical driving test by booking it through the DVSA or your driving instructor.

4. What Happens If You Fail?

  1. Rebooking: You can book a retest immediately but must wait at least 3 working days before taking the test again.
  2. Identify Weak Areas: Your printed results will highlight the areas where you performed poorly. Use this feedback to improve.
  3. Preparation: Review the test materials, practice mock tests, and work on your hazard perception skills to increase your chances of success.

5. Can You Appeal the Test Result?

If you believe there was an issue with the test, such as technical problems or unfair treatment, you can file a complaint with the DVSA. However, results are rarely overturned.

6. Can You Retake the Test If You Passed?

If you’ve passed, there’s no need to retake the test unless your pass certificate expires before you pass the practical driving test.

7. Additional Tips

  1. Keep Your Pass Certificate Safe: You’ll need the certificate number to book your practical test.
  2. Prepare for the Practical Test: Start driving lessons with a qualified instructor and familiarize yourself with the requirements of the practical exam.
