Rule 238: Yellow Lines and School Zones

  1. You MUST NOT wait or park on yellow lines during operational times.
  2. Double yellow lines mean no waiting at any time.
  3. School entrance markings: No stopping if signs prohibit it.

Rule 239: Safe Parking Practices

  1. Use designated parking areas where possible.
  2. Roadside parking guidelines:
  3. Do not park facing against traffic.
  4. Park as close as possible to the side.
  5. Avoid blocking access for Blue Badge holders.
  6. Switch off engine, headlights, and fog lights.
  7. Apply handbrake and check surroundings before exiting.
  8. Use the Dutch Reach (open the door with the opposite hand to check for cyclists).
  9. Passengers should exit on the kerb side.
  10. Secure valuables and lock the vehicle.
  11. When using a hand-held parking device, ensure safety and maintain control.
  12. Electric vehicle users should avoid trip hazards with charging cables.

Rule 240: No Parking Zones

You MUST NOT stop or park on:

  1. Motorway carriageway, emergency area, or hard shoulder (except in emergencies).
  2. Pedestrian crossings (zig-zag lines), clearways, taxi bays, urban clearways.
  3. Roads with double white lines (except for passengers or goods loading/unloading).
  4. Cycle lanes, tram lanes, or red routes (unless signs permit).

Rule 241: Reserved Parking Spaces

  1. You MUST NOT park in spaces reserved for Blue Badge holders, residents, or motorcycles unless permitted.

Rule 242: Dangerous or Obstructive Parking

  1. You MUST NOT leave a vehicle in a dangerous position or obstruct the road.

Rule 243: No Parking in High-Risk Areas

DO NOT stop or park:

  1. Near a school entrance.
  2. Anywhere blocking Emergency Services.
  3. At or near bus stops, tram stops, or taxi ranks.
  4. Near a junction (within 10m).
  5. On a hilltop, bend, or cycle lane.
  6. In front of a driveway or where the kerb is lowered for disabled access.

Rule 244: Pavement Parking

  1. You MUST NOT park on the pavement in London; avoid elsewhere unless signs permit.

Rule 245: Controlled Parking Zones

  1. Controlled Parking Zones: Check entry signs for restrictions.
  2. Goods Vehicles over 7.5 tonnes MUST NOT park on verges, pavements, or central reservations without police permission.
  3. Loading and Unloading: Check for yellow markings and signs restricting activity.

  1. You MUST NOT park against traffic flow at night unless in a marked space.

Rule 249: Parking Lights on High-Speed Roads

Rule 250: Parking Without Lights

  1. Without lights, parking is allowed if:
  2. Speed limit is 30 mph or less.
  3. Vehicle is at least 10m from a junction and facing traffic flow.
  4. It is in a marked parking bay or lay-by.
  5. Other vehicles and trailers MUST NOT be left unlit at night.

Rule 251: Parking in Fog

  1. Avoid parking in fog. If necessary, keep parking/sidelights on.

Rule 252: Parking on Hills

  1. When parking on a hill:
  2. Uphill: Turn wheels away from the kerb.
  3. Downhill: Turn wheels towards the kerb.
  4. Use โ€˜Parkโ€™ mode for automatic vehicles.
