Rule 83: Helmets
- MUST wear a protective helmet for both rider and pillion passenger.
- Exception: Sikhs wearing a turban are exempt.
- Helmets MUST comply with legal Regulations and be fastened securely.
- Recommended: Riders of motor tricycles and quadbikes should also wear helmets.
- Before riding: Check that helmet visor is clean and in good condition.
Rule 84: Protective Gear
- Eye protectors are advisable and MUST comply with Regulations.
- Scratched or poorly fitting eye protectors can limit vision, especially in bright sunlight or darkness.
- Consider wearing:
- Ear protection
- Strong boots, gloves, and suitable clothing for protection in case of a collision.
Rule 85: Carrying Passengers (Pillion Riders)
- MUST NOT carry more than one pillion passenger.
- Passenger MUST sit astride the motorcycle on a proper seat, facing forward with both feet on the footrests.
- MUST NOT carry a pillion unless the motorcycle is designed to do so.
- Provisional licence holders MUST NOT carry a pillion passenger.
Rule 86: Daylight Riding
- Increase visibility from the side, front, and rear.
- How to improve visibility:
- Wear a light or brightly coloured helmet.
- Wear fluorescent clothing or strips.
- Use dipped headlights even in good daylight.
- Be cautious: Other road users may not see you or judge your speed correctly, especially at junctions.
- Key Tip: Help yourself to be seen!
Rule 87: Riding in the Dark
- Wear reflective clothing or strips to improve visibility.
- Reflective materials help reflect headlights, making you visible from a longer distance.
Rule 88: Manoeuvring
- Always check what is behind and to the sides before manoeuvring.
- Look behind you and use mirrors (if fitted).
- Be aware of:
- Pedestrians crossing between vehicles.
- Vehicles emerging from junctions or changing lanes.
- Traffic queues—position yourself so that drivers in front can see you in their mirrors.
- Filtering in slow-moving traffic: Take care and keep speed low.
