Rule 83: Helmets

  1. MUST wear a protective helmet for both rider and pillion passenger.
  2. Exception: Sikhs wearing a turban are exempt.
  3. Helmets MUST comply with legal Regulations and be fastened securely.
  4. Recommended: Riders of motor tricycles and quadbikes should also wear helmets.
  5. Before riding: Check that helmet visor is clean and in good condition.

Rule 84: Protective Gear

  1. Eye protectors are advisable and MUST comply with Regulations.
  2. Scratched or poorly fitting eye protectors can limit vision, especially in bright sunlight or darkness.
  3. Consider wearing:
    1. Ear protection
    2. Strong boots, gloves, and suitable clothing for protection in case of a collision.

Rule 85: Carrying Passengers (Pillion Riders)

  1. MUST NOT carry more than one pillion passenger.
  2. Passenger MUST sit astride the motorcycle on a proper seat, facing forward with both feet on the footrests.
  3. MUST NOT carry a pillion unless the motorcycle is designed to do so.
  4. Provisional licence holders MUST NOT carry a pillion passenger.

Rule 86: Daylight Riding

  1. Increase visibility from the side, front, and rear.
  2. How to improve visibility:
    1. Wear a light or brightly coloured helmet.
    2. Wear fluorescent clothing or strips.
    3. Use dipped headlights even in good daylight.
  3. Be cautious: Other road users may not see you or judge your speed correctly, especially at junctions.
  4. Key Tip: Help yourself to be seen!

Rule 87: Riding in the Dark

  1. Wear reflective clothing or strips to improve visibility.
  2. Reflective materials help reflect headlights, making you visible from a longer distance.

Rule 88: Manoeuvring

  1. Always check what is behind and to the sides before manoeuvring.
  2. Look behind you and use mirrors (if fitted).
  3. Be aware of:
    1. Pedestrians crossing between vehicles.
    2. Vehicles emerging from junctions or changing lanes.
    3. Traffic queues—position yourself so that drivers in front can see you in their mirrors.
    4. Filtering in slow-moving traffic: Take care and keep speed low.
