Eyesight Test

Your ability to meet the required eyesight standard is critical for passing your practical driving test. At the start of the test, you’ll asked to tread a parked car’s number plate.

1. Failing the Eyesight Test

  1. If you are unable to read the number plate correctly, your driving test will immediately terminate.
  2. The DVLA will be notified, and your driving licence will be revoked until you meet the required eyesight standards.

2. Key Points

You must be able to read a vehicle number plate from a distance of 20 metres for vehicles registered after 1 September 2001, and 20.5 metres for vehicles registered before this date.

3. Tips to Prepare for the Test

  1. Practice at home with parked vehicles to ensure you can read number plates clearly from these distances.
  2. Ensure your glasses or lenses are clean and up-to-date based on your latest eye test.
  3. If you’re unsure about meeting the standards, get a professional assessment.
  4. Anxiety can affect your ability to focus, so stay relaxed to perform at your best.
  5. Always wear glasses or contact lenses during the test if you need them to meet the eyesight requirements.
  6. You must continue to wear them every time you drive if they are necessary for meeting the legal standards of vision.
